Can you build muscle while burning fat? Let’s dive in.
There are always exceptions, but the typical American significantly under eats in the area of protein while overeating in carbs and fats. Think cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and pasta for dinner. Protein, at best, is an afterthought.
When we change up our clients’ macro balance and increase their protein intake (most of the time while simultaneously bringing up their carbs as well) so many see fantastic results! Why? Because we are swapping out some of those carb and fat calories for protein, and as I mentioned, sometimes while increasing macros across the board. Protein is the building block of skeletal muscle mass. You can learn more about why protein is so important HERE. When we get our clients to trust us and hit their macros they see drastic body composition changes EVEN WHEN the scale lags behind. Sufficient protein (goal body weight in grams) helps to support muscle retention. We specialize in keeping calories high enough to fuel our clients but low enough to be in a slight deficit to support their fat loss goals.
We call that macro magic!
All that being said, if you are lean already and hoping to put on more muscle mass to get stronger while seeing that great muscle definition and toning, your body likely needs MORE food. You’ll need to eat in a calorie surplus instead of a deficit. Read more about the “Skinny Fat” cure HERE.
