If you’ve spent any time on social media lately, you’ve probably seen the viral dot cakes taking over your feed. Those colorful sprinkle-covered cakes inspired this fun breakfast version: Dot Pancake Bowls.

I turned the trend into a high-protein breakfast that’s perfect for meal prep. Each bowl is packed with birthday cake flavor thanks to Cake Batter protein powder and colorful sprinkles baked right into the batter.

Ingredients

  • Pancake mix
  • Cake Batter or Vanilla Whey Protein Powder
  • Plain non-fat Greek yogurt
  • Vanilla bean paste
  • Water
  • Sprinkles

Optional Toppings

  • Cool Whip
  • Additional sprinkles
  • Fresh berries
  • Maple syrup
  • Greek yogurt
  • Nut butter
  • Powdered peanut butter

Ingredient Substitutions

Protein Powder

I use Clean Simple Eats Cake Batter Whey Protein Powder because it gives these bowls that classic birthday cake flavor. Vanilla whey protein works great as well.

Greek Yogurt

Plain non-fat Greek yogurt adds moisture and extra protein. You can substitute vanilla Greek yogurt if that’s what you have on hand.

Vanilla Bean Paste

This ingredient is optional but adds great flavor. Pure vanilla extract works perfectly as a substitute.

Pancake Mix

Any complete pancake mix should work well. Just keep in mind that different brands may slightly change the texture and nutrition information.

Why These Work So Well for Meal Prep

One of my favorite things about this recipe is that it takes a viral trend and turns it into something practical.

The decorated version with Cool Whip and sprinkles is adorable for birthdays and celebrations, but most of you will most likely want to skip these additional calories for a regular meal prep week.

After baking, simply allow the bowls to cool, cover them, and store them in the refrigerator. Each morning, reheat one bowl in the microwave and add your favorite toppings.

A few meal-prep-friendly topping ideas include:

  • Fresh strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Bananas
  • Sugar-free syrup
  • Greek yogurt
  • Peanut butter
  • Almond butter
  • Powdered peanut butter

Because the bowls bake directly in the serving dish, there’s no portioning required afterward. The bowls go straight from the oven to the refrigerator, making cleanup incredibly easy.

How to Store Dot Pancake Bowls

Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.

To reheat, microwave for 1–2 minutes or until warmed through.

If you plan to make the decorated version with Cool Whip and sprinkles, wait until serving day before adding the toppings for the best texture.

My Favorite Protein Powder

I used Clean Simple Eats Cake Batter whey protein powder in this recipe.

It mixes well, tastes great, and works beautifully in baked recipes like these pancake bowls.

Meal Prep Tips

  • Bake directly in 2-cup glass meal prep bowls.
  • Allow the bowls to cool completely before covering.
  • Store individual portions in the refrigerator for easy grab-and-go breakfasts.
  • Pair with eggs, turkey sausage, cottage cheese, or Greek yogurt for even more protein.
  • Freeze individual bowls if you’d like to keep a batch on hand for longer storage.

Whether you’re making these for a birthday breakfast, a fun summer treat, or your weekly meal prep, these Dot Pancake Bowls are an easy way to bring a little extra fun to your mornings.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups pancake mix
  • 15 tablespoons Clean Simple Eats Cake Batter Whey Protein Powder, or Vanilla Whey
  • 5 tablespoons plain nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla bean paste, optional
  • 2 1/2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon sprinkles

Optional Toppings (not included in macros)

  • 200 g Cool Whip, 40g per bowl
  • 80 g sprinkles, 16g per bowl

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Arrange 5 oven-safe dishes on a sheet pan and lightly coat with cooking spray. I like to use 2-cup glass meal prep bowls.
  • To each bowl, add: 1/2 cup pancake mix, 3 tablespoons protein powder, 1 tablespoon Greek yogurt, 1/2 cup water and 1/4 teaspoon vanilla bean paste. Stir until smooth and well combined.
  • Divide the tablespoon of sprinkles evenly among the 5 bowls and gently stir them into the batter.
  • Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until the centers are set and cooked through.
  • Allow the pancake bowls to cool completely before covering and storing them in the refrigerator.
  • To serve, reheat in the microwave for 1–2 minutes and enjoy with your favorite pancake toppings.

Optional Frosted Birthday Cake Topping

  • For the funfetti cake-inspired version shown in the video and photos, refrigerate the pancake bowls for at least 30 minutes after baking. Spread 40g of Cool Whip over each bowl, then flip the bowl upside down and gently dip the whipped topping into a shallow bowl of sprinkles to coat the top.

Notes
