Anyone in the position of a caregiver—whether that’s to children, aging parents, clients, or even pets—has felt the tension of taking care of themselves while also caring for everyone else.

And as we move into our 40s and beyond, that tension often increases.
Kids get older and busier.
Parents may need more support.
Friends walk through hard seasons.
Life gets full—and fast.
It can feel overwhelming, and the pressure to tend to everyone else’s needs can start to feel suffocating.
When Life Feels Like Too Much
When you’re in a season like this, there are absolutely things you can—and should—outsource.
There are also things you can cut out completely when your time and energy are limited.
Paring down your commitments and focusing on what truly matters is not only helpful—it’s necessary.
But even with all of that…
There are still a few things that no one else can do for you.
The Things You Can’t Outsource
When you really stop and think about it, there are a few non-negotiables:
- Eating → Nobody can eat for you
- Moving your body → Nobody can work out for you
- Spending time in your faith → Nobody else can fill your cup spiritually
These are the things that have to stay on your priority list—because they directly impact how you show up for everything and everyone else.
Adjust the Standard—Not the Priority
Now here’s where grace comes in.
You may not be able to do these things the way you normally would—and that’s okay.
This isn’t about perfection. It’s about consistency.
- If you can’t cook every meal, hit the easy button and choose something simple—like a grilled chicken sandwich and a side salad to get your protein and veggies in.
- If your normal gym routine isn’t happening, go for a quick walk, jog, or do a short bodyweight workout at home.
- If your quiet time looks different, pray while you fold laundry or listen to a podcast while you clean the kitchen.
It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to happen.
Why This Matters
When you stay intentional with these three things, something powerful happens.
They create a trickle-down effect into the rest of your life:
- More energy
- Better mood
- Greater patience
- Stronger resilience
You may still have hard days (we all do), but you’ll be able to run stronger through them.
It’s Not Selfish—It’s Necessary
Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish.
You were created with these needs.
And tending to them allows you to continue showing up for the people who need you most.
So if you’re in a full, overwhelming season right now…
Give yourself permission to simplify.
Give yourself grace.
But don’t let go of the things only you can do.
