7 Health Lessons I Wish I Knew Before Turning 40

When I turned 40, I expected to celebrate another birthday.

What I didn’t expect was to feel healthier than I had in years.

The truth is, getting here wasn’t about discovering a miracle supplement or finding the perfect workout plan. It was about finally stopping long enough to ask a simple question:

Why don’t I feel like myself anymore?

For several years, my energy was low. I wasn’t sleeping well. My capacity to do the things that once came naturally felt smaller. I craved sugar constantly just to make it through the day.

I assumed it was stress. Hormones. Age. Maybe this was just what turning 40 looked like.

This past year, I decided to stop guessing and start looking for answers. Comprehensive bloodwork uncovered things I never would have known otherwise, and with the help of knowledgeable providers, I finally began addressing the root causes instead of simply pushing through the symptoms.

Today, I’m sleeping better than I have in years. My energy is back. I’ve lost nearly 13 pounds. My workouts feel better, and perhaps most importantly—I finally feel like myself again.

Here are the biggest lessons I wish I had learned sooner.

1. Don’t Stop at “Your Labs Are Normal.”

One of the biggest mistakes many women make is assuming that “normal” means “healthy.”

Standard bloodwork is designed to identify disease. It doesn’t always identify why you feel exhausted, struggle to lose weight, or simply don’t feel like yourself.

Working with a provider who specializes in optimal health and understands women’s hormones made all the difference for me.

Instead of simply checking boxes, my provider looked at the complete picture—my symptoms, hormone levels, vitamin status, and lifestyle—to create a personalized plan.

If you’ve been told your labs are normal but you know something still isn’t right, don’t ignore your instincts.

2. Better Sleep Changes Everything

One of the biggest surprises from my bloodwork was an elevated hematocrit level.

Hematocrit measures the percentage of your blood made up of red blood cells. Elevated levels can sometimes be a sign that your body isn’t getting enough oxygen while you sleep, which can be associated with sleep apnea.

That finding led me to get evaluated, and I discovered I had sleep apnea.

Instead of a CPAP machine, I was able to use a custom bite guard—and it has honestly been one of the best health purchases I’ve ever made.

Today I sleep deeper than I have in years.

And here’s something I didn’t expect…

Nutrition suddenly became easier.

When you’re well rested, you’re not constantly reaching for sugar and caffeine just to survive the day.

3. Vitamin Deficiencies Matter More Than You Think

My comprehensive bloodwork also revealed a severe B12 deficiency.

My level was under 200.

Low B12 can contribute to fatigue, brain fog, poor recovery, and low energy—many of the exact symptoms I had been struggling with.

With guidance from my provider, I began B12 injections every two weeks.

Today, my B12 levels are back in the optimal range, and the difference in how I feel has been incredible.

4. Hormone Support Isn’t Something to Fear

Another important piece of my puzzle was hormone support.

My provider recommended:

  • Pregnenolone
  • Progesterone
  • Vitamin D with K2

These recommendations were based on my lab work—not guesswork.

One of the biggest things I’ve learned is this:

Aging is inevitable. Feeling miserable doesn’t have to be.

There are knowledgeable providers who can help you navigate perimenopause and optimize your health instead of simply telling you your symptoms are part of getting older.

5. Accountability Is Still My Superpower

Even as a nutrition coach, I have a coach.

Because accountability works.

Every week, my coach reviews my check-in, adjusts my macros when needed, and gives me one clear plan to follow.

No overthinking.

No constantly changing plans.

Just consistency.

I’ve learned that I perform better when someone is expecting me to show up.

Checking into our coaching Facebook group each week has been one of the biggest reasons I’ve stayed consistent.

6. Health Is About Addressing Root Causes

For years, I was treating symptoms. Now I’m treating causes.

That shift has changed everything.

Instead of asking,

“How can I get through today?”

I started asking,

“Why do I feel this way?”

Sometimes the answer isn’t another workout or another diet. Sometimes it’s information.

7. The Best Is Yet to Come

Turning 40 doesn’t feel like the beginning of the end.

It feels like the beginning of a healthier chapter.

Today I’m:

  • Nearly 13 pounds down
  • Sleeping better than I have in years
  • More energetic throughout the day
  • In a better mood
  • Following through with my nutrition goals again

Most importantly…

I finally feel like myself again and I think the best is yet to come.
