There are some couples who both track their macros, and they make a great team as they support each other and meal prep together! Then there are other couples where only one spouse is into macros, and it can make the macro life a little challenging! I want to encourage you that you can make macros work even if your spouse isn’t on board- not only can you make it work, you might find that your spouse is inspired and intrigued by watching you and your progress!
There are a few things to keep in mind whenever you embark on a big health change, especially when it involves food and there are others who are going to be involved simply because you’re living under the same roof.
- Recognize that your journey is YOURS. This is a step you are taking for your future health and goals, and it’s ok if they don’t join you! Just stay focused on YOUR why, and work your lane.
- Don’t judge your spouse in their journey. Just like your journey is yours, theirs is THEIRS. Hounding and harassing them and picking on whatever food choices they make is not going to do any good; if anything, it will build resentment and give them food guilt which nobody deserves!!
- Marriage and relationships are important! Yes, food and health and fitness is important, but never at the cost of your marriage/family. Remember that this journey is about consistency, not perfection; I encourage you to take untracked date nights, enjoy weekends away with each other and family vacations where you don’t track! In the end, the consistency will make up for those untracked events.
- Communication is KEY!!! Ask your spouse for their support, communicate your goals, and let them know you have flexibility but need their help in planning ahead. It’s hard to hit your numbers without some prior planning. Tell them that knowing ahead of time as often as possible will help you out! If you have a regular pizza night that is important to your family, plan for it! Front load your protein earlier in the day, add a salad along with your pizza to balance your meal and don’t just skip out on the family time. You can almost always make any meal work if you really want to!
- Finally, the old saying “you catch more flies with honey than vinegar” rings true! By setting a positive, encouraging example for your spouse by fueling your body in balance, you’ll be paving the way for them to want what you have. When they see your energy improve, workouts grow stronger, your body composition changes etc, they’re going to be inspired!! Lead by example, worry ‘bout yourself and let the rest work itself out!
