“There is NO way I can eat this much food!”
“You recommend giving up alcohol for 6 weeks. That’s not possible.”
“I have to track everything? This is too much work.”
“Progress is so slow. I’m never going to reach my goals.”
Have you heard yourself saying one of these phrases or something similar? Do you often tell yourself that you can’t do something or that you’ll never look good in this or that? Do you find yourself not even trying because you are so afraid to fail?
I want to ask you something – Have you tried? Have you tried to eat ALL the food? Have you tried to give up the alcohol? Have you tried to reach your goals? And I mean REALLY tried! Nothing about reaching our goals is easy. I’m not here to tell you it’s a walk in the park because it’s not. Making goals and achieving them takes hard work and dedication. It takes time and patience. But most importantly, it takes a belief in yourself. A belief that you can do hard things. A belief that you WILL make these changes. Because without that belief in yourself you aren’t going to get very far.
What I’m talking about here is shifting your mindset. Mindsets are the beliefs we have about ourselves and our qualities and abilities. If you are always thinking about things negatively and with a “I can’t” or “I won’t” attitude, then guess what, you “Can’t” and you “Won’t.” We believe the things we tell ourselves and we make them out to be true even when they aren’t. I’m willing to bet if you told yourself you CAN eat all the food, then eating all that food isn’t going to be near as difficult as it will be if you are at the same time telling yourself you just can’t possibly do this.
Mindset is often underrated in the health and fitness world. Everyone is so focused on improving their physical appearance that they don’t notice all the other positive changes happening. It is our mindset growth that will help us to believe in ourselves when times get tough and physical progress slows. You can have everything lined up perfectly – numbers given to you that work like a charm, an exercise routine that is easy to manage, and a plan of how to get things done – but if you don’t BELIEVE you can succeed and follow through with these changes in your life then you will quickly fall off track when things get a little difficult or progress slows. It’s during these tough times that our mindset can make or break us!
As we shift our mindset and truly start thinking positively about what we CAN do, that’s when real change takes place. Our mindset and perception of ourselves ends up driving those physical changes we want to see. If we only focus on the physical changes and don’t look at all the positive aspects of our journey then our progress won’t ever seem like it is coming fast enough. But when we focus on all the positive changes, we can see so much growth all around! So much of what we struggle with from day to day happens in our minds! If we can make a shift from that of a negative outlook to that of a positive one then our goals won’t seem as unattainable and we won’t give up when the going gets tough.
Starting today I’m asking you to shift your mindset from thinking about all the things you can’t do and to start telling yourself about all the things you CAN and WILL do. Write down some positive affirmations and say them to yourself every day even if you don’t quite believe them yet. Telling ourselves we can, will not only help us believe in ourselves, but it also helps make our goals become our realities.
Do you know who our most successful clients are? They are the ones who know it’s hard, but believe they can do it anyways. They are the ones who stick to it even when progress is slower because they believe in themselves and know they will accomplish their goals given time! You know what I believe? I believe that each and every one of you has the capability to shift your mindset to that of a positive one where you believe in yourself and your ability to conquer all your goals in life!
